1.3 Activity/User Testing Research Methods

Instructions

By Module 12, you will test one (or both) of your thesis deliverables (1, 2, or 4) on a member(s) of your target audience.

With help from your instructor, you will decide on your research method by Module 5. Be prepared to document your user testing session with images or video. It may be useful to ask someone to help you with this.

Steps for this Module

To help you determine the thesis deliverable to prototype, and the best research method for your project and audience, look through your textbook: Universal Methods of Design.

Identify three possible research methods, and briefly outline why you think each technique may work. Give feedback and suggestions to your classmates on their plans. Turn your discussion post(s) into a process blog entry and post a live link to this entry by the end of this module.

Research Method 1: Evaluative Research
Evaluative Research allows you to test a prototype with your target audience. It provides valuable feedback from your actual user. This method would work for the Integrasian App. It will allow me to refine the design so it will be more user friendly. It can be used for my other deliverables.

Research Method 2: Interviews
Interviews are a structured conversation. One participant asks questions, and the other provides the answers. Conducting interviews will help gather specific information for my thesis.

Research Method 3: Focus Groups
Focus groups are a group of people participating in a guided discussion about a particular product or campaign before it's launched. Observations of the group’s dynamic, their answers to focus group questions, and even their body language can guide future research on decisions, products and services. This method will allow me to gather information about the materials from my target audience.
